Gyandum Shawl

Merino Wool + Ladakhi Sheepwool

The handwoven shawl features the beautiful ‘Tangka Gyandum’ – the circular, central medallion considered an auspicious symbol in Ladakh for happiness and prosperity. It’s commonly found carved in the entrance gates of monasteries and traditional Ladakhi houses. It’s also a common motif in the brocades, with roots in Tibet and China. The central medallion is flanked by two undulating vines bearing flower-like motifs. The motifs are rendered in the extra weft technique, a first-of-its-kind in Ladakh.

The yarns are mill-spun and dyed in Azo-free dyes; sourced from West Bengal (Woolmark Certified factory for Merino wool) and Changthang (Ladakhi Sheep wool). The shawl is handwoven by women artisans of Ladakh. Merino wool and Ladakhi Sheep wool lend a luxurious fluidity to the shawl.
